Located just 45 minutes north of Grand Rapids. The Muskegon River below
Croton Dam is a broad tailwater which boasts prolific runs of King Salmon and
Steelhead from Lake Michigan. It also has a healthy population of resident brown
and rainbow trout. Salmon begin to ascend the Muskegon River in September,
with peak fishing in the month of October. Following the Salmon are the silver
bullet fall Steelhead which begin to enter the Muskegon in fishable numbers in
mid to late October. Peak fall Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon runs from late
October thru mid December. Fall run Steelhead winter over in the Muskegon
making for some great opportunities to get out of the house in the winter and
have the river to yourself. Some of the biggest fish of the year are caught in the
winter months. February usually brings the first shot of spring run Steelhead and
the run progresses into April as water temps rise. Peak spring Steelhead fishing
on the Muskegon River is mid to late March thru the end of April and into May.
This time of year offers some exciting shallow water sight fishing and fish can be
found in most any type of water.
Pere Marquette River:
The Pere Marquette is a narrow free flowing spring fed river winding through the
Manistee National Forest. Along with a good population of resident trout the PM
is full of spawning gravel. It is one of the few rivers in Michigan that has a self
sustaining Salmon and Steelhead population, natural reproduction! Salmon
fishing on the PM starts in late August and peaks in mid September and through
October. Steelhead start showing up in October and winter over. Peak spring
Steelhead is usually mid March thru mid April.
